Our weekly art therapist begins every session with a small warm up activity. Recently she was showing residents black and white photos of vintage Hollywood stars. A few of the residents recognised the faces immediately and rattled off their names ... Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Marlon Brando.... One of the women quietly muttered "I'm no good at this stuff.” We were looking at a photo of Judy Garland. I started singing a tune from The Wizard of Oz . . . "We're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of Oz..." Her face lit up, “yes, I remember this.” Music is uniquely effective in helping us to remember as it creates a link to a person's past. This can help us to connect with people in the present.
